Saturday Sermon: Union With Christ in Christian Living

One of the most foundation doctrines of the Christian life is the reality of the believer’s union with Christ. By the mysterious power of God the believer is united to Christ so that salvific works and benefits of Christ becomes possession of the believer.

I recently listened to Dr. Sinclair Ferguson message where he talks about this doctrine. I would highly recommend this message to you as either a great introduction or a great reminder about this reality.

Saturday Sermon: A Neglected Essential

Alistair Begg recently preached this sermon at the chapel of Southern Seminary. The topic of the sermon was on the ascension of Christ, how it is neglected and what place it has in the life of Christ. I found it really helpful to return to this doctrine and see it afresh.

Greg Beale has a lot of good things to say about many things. I have enjoyed everything that I have heard and read from him. Two books that I have read from him are The Temple and the Church’s Mission: Biblical Theology of the Dwelling Place of God and We Become What We Worship: A Biblical Theology of Idolatry. Both of these I would recommend. However, “The Temple and the Church’s Mission” gives the better example of tracing a theme throughout the entire tapestry of Scripture. If you were going to make your way through a Beale book I would recommend this one.

Richard Bauckham Lectures

Dr. Richard Bauckham came and spoke at Southern Seminary earlier this semester. Dr. Bauckham is Professor Emeritus at St Andrews in Scotland. He is an acclaimed New Testament scholar who has done tremendous work in the field of the historicity of the New Testament. Two of his important works are Jesus and the God of Israel: God Crucified and Other Studies on the New Testament’s Christology of Divine Identity and Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels As Eyewitness Testimony.

Saturday Sermon: Dr. Lambert’s Testimony

 

“Paula Jamison was my mother—and I hated her…I hated her.”

Thus, beings the opening lines of Dr. Heath Lambert’s testimony. It a moving testimony of God grace invading a family which was being destroyed  by sin. A testimony of a mother who abused her children, the children who wanted their mother to die, and the grace of Christ invading to make all things new. Saturday Sermon: The Power of Example

My Pastor, Ryan Fullerton, received the honor of preaching at the chapel service of Southern Seminary. His message was on the power of example which stands behind one’s ministry. As ministers of the gospel the powerful force that stands behind our message is the example of our lives. If we forget this, our lives can bring our ministries to ruin.

Ryan is a very gifted and powerful preacher of God’s Word. I am blessed every Sunday to sit under his teaching at Immanuel. Ryan has a gift in communicating the Word in an engaging manner that grips the heart with deep and practical truth. And as such, I joyfully commend this sermon!

Saturday Sermon: God’s Open Call

This sermon was preached by Kevin Smith in Southern Seminary’s chapel.

Kevin Smith gave a great and convicting word about pastoring to dying congregations. So many future ministers seem to close the possibility that God would want them to serve in churches where the congregation is old and there is not much to any life in the church. The temptation is to immediately move to plant churches. But our God is great and powerful enough to call forth life in any church situation. Every future minister of the gospel needs to be open to going to a church of 45 people over the age of 50 to love and teach them.
